Santa Caterina in the morning light, the bay near Cerro, the Castelli di Cannero, Pallanza & Suna and Laveno-Mombello: our secret tips from the water.
Insider tips
Lake Maggiore is often overrun at hotspots like Isola Bella and Stresa. If you still want to fill your holiday with quiet moments, hidden bays and real secret tips, you need more than a classic travel guide. That is exactly why we wrote this article: concrete insider tips that show you where to find special places on Lake Maggiore, how to avoid mass tourism and how to experience the lake the way few people know it.
Looking for alternatives to crowded promenades in Stresa, standard motorboat tours and the same old photos in front of Isola Bella? Then you've come to the right place. We'll show you quiet corners, secret swimming spots and boat experiences that make your trip to Italy truly unforgettable – far off the beaten track.
We are out on the water with the Striga Constanze in Laveno-Mombello, a traditional gaff cutter with red gaff sails and a home port right on the lake. Every day we see Lake Maggiore from the water – in the morning calm, the evening light and everything in between. These tips are especially aimed at couples, families and small groups who want to travel relaxed, authentically and with plenty of peace.

Lake Maggiore offers numerous lesser-known places away from the tourist magnets. Yet most visitors only move along the main roads, the SS33 and the well-known lakeside promenades – and miss the real beauty of this region between Italy and Switzerland.
Anyone who dares to leave the familiar paths discovers an astonishing variety: quiet bays that are barely accessible from land, villages with genuine Italian charm and perspectives that no paperback guidebook shows, not even in its latest edition. From the water, the lake has a completely different effect – quieter, wider, more hidden. Mountains are reflected in the smooth water, monasteries seem to grow out of rock faces, and the light changes colour by the minute.
Insider tips also help you in very practical ways: you avoid time traps, parking chaos and overcrowded spots that take up every space between Milan and Locarno in high season. Instead, you experience places where locals spend their evenings – not people all taking the same photo.

+ €20 p. p.Private tourThis article revolves around five categories of experience that we have put together from years of experience on the lake: quiet places on land, secret swimming spots, special boat tours, magical sunrises and sunsets, and seasonal highlights. Each category is explored further below – here is an overview:
The Eremo di Santa Caterina del Sasso is a monastery built into the rock face, and early in the morning you have it almost to yourself.
Swimming with a view of the Borromean Islands, without the crowds.
Uninhabited ruins on rocky islets, pirate legends and open to the public for the first time since 2025.
Strolling, aperitivo and evening atmosphere like the locals.
An underrated destination with panoramic views from Sasso del Ferro.
Many of these places are best – or only – enjoyed in peace by boat. With the Striga Constanze we set off daily from Laveno-Mombello and know the quietest time slots, the most beautiful anchorages and the corners no bus reaches.

Insider tip 1
The Eremo di Santa Caterina del Sasso sees fewer tourists early in the morning – and that is exactly what makes a visit before 9 a.m. a real secret tip. While groups of visitors arrive during the day via the winding stairway or the rock lift, in the early hours the monastery lies silently above the mirror-smooth water. Founded in the 12th century by the merchant Alberto Besozzi, who became a hermit after a storm on the lake, the complex holds frescoes from the 13th to the 17th century and an atmosphere that invites nature and calm.
The best viewpoints are not on land but on the water: below the cliffs near Leggiuno the monastery chapel is reflected in the lake – a sight that is particularly impressive from the stretch of shore between Reno and Arolo. The small viewing terrace on the upper road is also a worthwhile detour.
For photographers: the best months are April to June and September. Shortly after sunrise, golden light bathes the rock face in warm colours, the water is calm and the reflection almost perfect. In high summer (July–August) more people are about here too, but from the boat the perceived crowds shrink considerably.
With the Striga Constanze we regularly run morning tours to Santa Caterina – an experience many of our guests describe as the highlight of their entire trip. Hardly any other boats, a quiet inboard engine, coffee on board, and then this picture: the monastery above you, set into the rock, with the lake as a mirror. More on our tour "Magical Morning Atmosphere".
Insider tip 2
Between Cerro and Ceresolo lies a small bay that is barely accessible from land. No sign, no car park, no bar – just calm, clear water and an open view towards Isola Bella and Isola Madre. That is exactly what makes this place special.
The atmosphere here is fundamentally different from the busy beaches: sand-and-pebble bottom, gentle entry, and often only a few boats in sight. The best time of day for sun is between noon and early afternoon, when the sunlight shines through the water and the Borromean Islands shimmer on the horizon. The water depth is moderate and suitable for safe anchoring and swimming – for families too.
On our 4- and 7-hour tours we regularly anchor here: swimming, sunbathing on deck, an aperitivo on board – and then on towards the next hidden corner. The nearby Spiaggia di Ceresolo and the somewhat more remote Spiaggia delle Rianne are natural beaches with minimal infrastructure, freely accessible and with parking about 40 to 50 metres away.
Insider tip 3
Right off Cannero Riviera two small rocky islets rise from the lake – on them the Castelli di Cannero, uninhabited ruins that are usually admired only from afar. Their story is worthy of a film: in the early 15th century the five pirate brothers of the Mazzarditi family used the castle as a base for raids and controlled the trade routes on the lake. Only in 1414 did Filippo Maria Visconti end their rule with a siege. Later, Lodovico Borromeo built the "Rocca Vitaliana" on the ruins as a fortification.
Legends surround the Castelli: the treasure of the Mazzarditi, supposedly thrown into the lake rather than handed over to the duke. The ghost ship said to appear on foggy days. Since 2025, after extensive restoration work the ruins are open to the public for the first time. A museum trail leads through the restored sections.
Our insider tip: the best perspectives are from the water, from both the north and the south side. Avoid the busy ferry routes between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. – in the late afternoon or early morning you'll enjoy the best light and shadow effects with far less traffic.
And for everyone who wants to do more than look: this is where we play our exit game "The Treasure of the Mazzarditi" – the first exit game on the water on Lake Maggiore. While castle ruins, islands and hermitages drift by, the group on board solves puzzles, guided by Beppe, the cheeky parrot of the pirate brothers. At the end you open the treasure chest together. An experience that combines sightseeing and puzzle fun – for families, groups of friends and companies alike.

Traditional gaff cutter, red sails, just your group. 3, 4 or 7 hours.

Insider tip 4
If you know Stresa but haven't visited Pallanza yet, you're missing out. Pallanza offers an elegant lakeside promenade with botanical gardens and an evening atmosphere that surprises even seasoned Italy lovers. The district of Suna adjoins seamlessly and, together with Pallanza, forms a relaxed alternative to touristy Stresa.
In the evening, locals stroll along the shore, the aperitivo bars slowly fill up, and the sunset paints the east shore in warm tones. Our tip: the area around Piazza Garibaldi has the best spots for sitting and people-watching. You'll find parking just off the promenade, and in the lesser-known lanes of the centre you'll discover small shops and trattorias that no guidebook lists – real shopping and real Italian cuisine, without the tourist mark-up.
Our tours often run along the Pallanza shore and offer a particularly peaceful view of the villas and the garden of Villa Taranto – a perspective you simply don't get from land.

Insider tip 5
Most travellers see Laveno-Mombello only as a ferry hub. Yet the town has real charm – and some of the best secret tips on the whole lake.
A walk from the harbour through the old boatyard quarter to Cerro passes small pebble beaches that lie away from the promenade and rarely appear in an article about Lake Maggiore. The historic fishing village of Feriolo has kept its charm and is only a short boat ride away.
The real insider tip in Laveno: the cable car up Sasso del Ferro. In about 15 to 16 minutes it takes you up to around 974 metres to the Poggio Sant'Elsa station. From there you can walk to the summit at 1,062 metres – with a panoramic view over the lake, the Borromean Islands, the Alpine peaks and as far as the Po Valley. Current prices and operating times are on the operator's website. The best time for the ride: late afternoon, when the evening light colours the islands and shorelines. Lesser-known hiking trails lead from the top back down into the valley, for example via Casere – ideal for anyone who loves hiking and sees the journey as the destination.
This is our home port, and we're happy to share personal recommendations for bars, bakeries and evening spots in Laveno with our guests.

Lake Maggiore covers around 212 to 216 square kilometres – plenty of room to get away from the crowds. But you only use this space if you leave the shore. From the water the lake feels different: the promenades recede into the distance, the noise of the roads disappears, and suddenly all you hear is wind and water.
With your own skipper you are flexible: you can use wind, light and crowd patterns to enjoy the quietest moments away from the scheduled boats. The Borromean Islands are very busy during the day – but if you pass by in the morning or evening on a private boat, you experience them without the crush. The fishermen's island Isola dei Pescatori is quieter and more romantic in the evening than at midday.
With the Striga Constanze, a traditional gaff cutter, we deliberately travel slower and quieter. 55.7 square metres of red gaff sails, a quiet inboard diesel and lots of wood – this is not a speedboat experience but a true immersion in the soul of the lake. Ideal for discovering hidden bays and rocky stretches in peace.

Write to us with no obligation via the contact form or WhatsApp (+39 333 3802 383). Tell us your preferred date (season from 1 March 2027), the desired duration (3, 4 or 7 hours) and any special wishes.
We suggest routes that match your preferences – for example Santa Caterina in the morning light, the Borromean Islands away from peak times or hidden swimming spots between Laveno and Verbania.
At the agreed departure point (standard: Laveno-Mombello, optionally e.g. Brebbia, Feriolo, Cannero or Cannobio): short briefing, cast off, arrive.
Depending on mood, weather and wishes, we adjust the route – swim stop, aperitivo break, heading for a small village, adding meditation or a photo shoot. There are no rigid loudspeaker programmes, just personal explanations and room for calm.
Mass motorboat tours have their place – fixed routes, high frequency, often lower cost per head. But anyone who really wants to experience Lake Maggiore quickly notices the limits: no individual stop, no sunrise, no swim in a secluded bay. And no moment that belongs only to you.
Our special features at a glance:
Red gaff sails, quiet inboard engine, lots of wood; an atmosphere like on a historic working boat, ideal for photos and slow travel.
Up to 8 guests at a fixed price (12 on request), giving real privacy for a marriage proposal, family outing, meditation or team event.
Not tied to fixed lines; we avoid busy times at Isola Bella & co. and know the sheltered bays.
Daily departures from Laveno-Mombello, personal tips on restaurants, bars, hikes and swimming spots on land.
Free rebooking in bad weather, so your insider moments don't get washed out.
Where others offer complexity and mass tourism, we offer clarity and calm. Where others deliver a standard programme, we deliver personal experiences.
Not everyone is looking for the same thing at the lake – which is exactly why it pays to tailor tips and activities to different types of travellers. Here are the visitor groups that, in our experience, benefit most from the insider information and our tours.
Quiet sunsets, hidden swimming spots, romantic routes for a marriage proposal or a honeymoon highlight. The island of San Giulio on neighbouring Lake Orta offers a spiritual retreat for a special detour.
Safe swim stops, pirate stories at the Castelli di Cannero, family-friendly tours with plenty of time for breaks. The Spiaggia di Mergozzo is ideal for families with children – quiet, clean, manageable. More ideas: Lake Maggiore with kids.
Morning mood on the lake, meditation tours, digital detox days far from the bustle of the shore. The Verzasca Valley offers secluded swimming spots for anyone seeking even more silence.
Exit game "Treasure of the Mazzarditi" as unusual team building, flexible 7-hour routes with a restaurant stop and plenty of room for shared memories.
All our tours are offered at a fixed price per boat and group – no per-person tickets, no hidden costs. The skipper is always included. So you know exactly in advance what your trip on the water will cost.
Add-ons such as the exit game (+€20 per person) or meditation with tea ceremony (+€20 per person) can be added to any tour – a special idea for an experience that goes beyond pure sightseeing.

Here we answer the typical questions our guests ask before their first trip to Lake Maggiore or before booking a private tour.
The best time to visit is from June to August, when water and temperatures are ideal. But if you are looking for especially quiet shores, it's better to travel in spring (April to early June) or early autumn (mid-September to the end of October). During these periods visibility and climate are excellent, the area is less crowded, and places like Lake Mergozzo – considered one of the cleanest lakes in Italy – invite relaxed hiking and swimming. Hiking trails around Lake Mergozzo offer breathtaking views. In high summer, early mornings and late evenings on the lake remain very quiet – our season starts on 1 March 2027.
Next step
Experience Lake Maggiore away from the crowds – quiet places, secret bays, a personal boat tour on a traditional gaff cutter. In short: the best moments on the lake belong to those who stray a little from the usual path.
Write to us with your preferred date, group size and preferences – we'll suggest an individual route that suits your trip. Every enquiry is without obligation and is usually answered within 24 hours.
