Private tourConcrete routes, current prices and travel dates for 2027: how to enjoy the lake's most beautiful places in 3–4 days without rushing from place to place.

Three days off, and yet the trip feels like work: traffic jams at the Gotthard, overcrowded viewpoints, a to-do list full of sights you can't possibly manage. Many people planning a short break on Lake Maggiore know this – and it doesn't have to be that way.
This article shows how you can experience the most beautiful places on the lake in 3–4 days without rushing from place to place. With concrete routes, current prices and travel dates for the 2027 season that you can put straight into your planning. No generic phrases, but a plan that works – because we know Lake Maggiore from the water. As the crew of the Striga Constanze, a traditional gaff cutter with its home port in Laveno-Mombello, we accompany guests through their best days on the lake every year. And we know: less programme means more experience.
Lake Maggiore is one of the few destinations in Europe where a long weekend really is enough to take something special home. The lake lies on the border between Switzerland and Italy, nestled between the Alps and Mediterranean vegetation – and is surprisingly quick to reach.
By car you reach the shore from southern Germany, Switzerland or Austria in about 4–6 hours. By train you travel via Basel–Milan or over the Gotthard to Locarno and on to the lake. Malpensa Airport is also only about 20 km from the southern shore.
Lake Maggiore offers Mediterranean flair and Alpine panoramas – with temperatures that are pleasant from March and climb to 25–30 °C in summer. The best time to visit Lake Maggiore is spring and autumn, when it's less busy and the light is especially golden.
Mountains, water, pretty lakeside towns like Stresa, Verbania, Laveno-Mombello and Cannobio – all in one region you can explore in half days. A trip to the Borromean Islands, a visit to the monastery, a stroll through winding lanes – these experiences fit effortlessly into a short break.
If you only have 3–4 days, you don't need a packed itinerary. Lake Maggiore rewards those who focus on a few, consciously chosen moments.

From the water everything looks different. Villas you barely notice from the road suddenly reveal their full splendour. Bays no guidebook mentions appear around the next bend. And in a few hours you glide past more sights than you could reach on land in a whole day.
That's exactly why we recommend starting your short break with a private boat tour on the traditional gaff cutter Striga Constanze. Instead of spending hours in the car commuting between lakeside towns or waiting for overcrowded ferries, you experience the highlights directly from the water. The skipper acts as your personal guide – saving research time and creating space for what really matters on a short break: arriving, breathing out, enjoying.
What sets a private boat tour on the Striga Constanze apart from standard excursions comes down to concrete advantages:
In 3 or 4 hours you combine the Borromean Islands, Santa Caterina del Sasso or the Castelli di Cannero – no changes, no waiting.
The boat belongs exclusively to your group. Up to 8 guests travel at a fixed price, up to 12 people on request. Not a mass excursion, but your own pace.
A swim stop in a quiet bay, an aperitivo on board, a photo stop in front of a hermitage or castle ruins: the schedule follows your wishes, not a rigid timetable.
Fixed price from €490 per tour including skipper. No per-person calculations, easy to plan within a short-break budget.
Free rebooking in unfavourable weather, so your short break isn't washed out.
The boat tour forms the backbone of the weekend – the experience around which you plan the remaining days.
Itinerary
The following plan works equally well for couples, families with children and small groups of friends. You'll find variant tips at the relevant points.
Plan to arrive in the afternoon or early evening – ideally on Friday, to make the most of the weekend.
Travel tips:
Where to spend the first night:
Evening programme: A stroll along the promenade in Laveno or Intra, then a first dinner with regional specialities – risotto al pesce persico, fresh pizza, with a glass of local wine. Simply arrive and let your gaze wander over the water.
The second day belongs to the lake. The stress of travel is gone, and there's enough time for a relaxed programme on land in the afternoon.
Concrete recommendation: Depart from Laveno-Mombello around 9:00 with a 3- or 4-hour tour. A sample route: along the Lombard shore to the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso – a historic 12th-century monastery spectacularly built into the cliffs above the lake – on to the Borromean Islands with Isola Bella and Isola Madre, with a short swim stop in a hidden bay in between.
How the tour works:
The tour is private and can be tailored to your wishes – whether a romantic sunset marriage proposal, a family pirate tour with treasure hunt or meditation on the water.

After the boat tour, the afternoon programme awaits on land:
Evening recommendation: Dinner by the lake in Stresa or in a trattoria in Laveno-Verbania. For photo lovers: the sunset from the east shore near Laveno is hard to beat – the sun disappears behind the mountains while the water shimmers gold.

Traditional gaff cutter, red sails, just your group. 3, 4 or 7 hours.

Two variants, depending on your departure time:
In the morning, visit the Borromean Islands by scheduled boat from Stresa. The Borromean Islands are a main attraction of Lake Maggiore. Isola Bella is known for its baroque palazzo and terraced gardens (admission approx. €27 for adults). Isola Madre is home to exotic plants and a historic doll collection. Many travellers recommend visiting only two islands on short trips to avoid stress – Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori are an ideal combination. Allow about 3–4 hours. Then a relaxed journey home.
A short stop in Cannobio – known for its picturesque lakeside promenade and historic patrician houses – for a market visit (Sunday market) and a stroll through the lanes. Or to Luino: the weekly market in Luino is one of the largest markets on Lake Maggiore. Allow 1–2 hours for strolling. Leave your luggage in the car, use the lakeside car parks, and take a last look at the lake with you.
Many guests tell us that after their first visit they'd like to stay a day longer. A fourth day opens up new possibilities:
Standard programmes on Lake Maggiore often look like this: a packed bus, one hour on the island, mass motorboat traffic. We do something different – and our guests notice it immediately:
Where others offer rigid routes, we offer your own rhythm. Where others deliver crowds, we deliver memories.

Real experiences help you plan your own short break better. Three examples from our season:
Arrival Friday evening, overnight stay in a hotel in Laveno with a lake view. On Saturday the 3-hour tour with a sunset marriage proposal on board, followed by a romantic dinner in Stresa. Sunday: a visit to Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori by scheduled boat, journey home in the afternoon. Verdict: "Experienced more in three days than in many a holiday week."
Three days with two children (8 and 11). The family pirate tour with a treasure hunt on board was the absolute highlight – the kids enthusiastically played along with the attack of the Mazzarditi pirate brothers. Then a swim stop and ice cream in Verbania. On the third day, a hike to the waterfalls in the valley behind Laveno.
Four days, team building on the boat with the exit game, a stroll through Cannobio, a shared breakfast on the terrace of the holiday apartment with a view of the mountains. The group booked a 4-hour tour plus a free day for individual exploring. Result: stress levels down, team spirit up.
Not every trip suits every destination. Lake Maggiore offers numerous attractions for every taste – but a short break works especially well for these groups:
Romantic getaways with a sunset tour, a honeymoon highlight or a marriage proposal on board. The lakeside setting, the flair of the towns and the calm on the water create moments that last.
Pirate tour, family outing with a swim stop, exit game for small and big explorers. The lake is family-friendly, and the surroundings varied enough for short attention spans. More tips: Lake Maggiore with kids.
A sociable short break with aperitivo on board, music and swimming spots away from the crowds. Up to 8 people at a fixed price make planning easy.
Team-building elements, solving puzzles together in the exit game, time away from the office in inspiring surroundings.
Meditation tours, digital detox cruises, a focus on slowing down. The lake and the area around the Maggia valley invite you to leave something behind.
The short break is less suitable for travellers expecting big-city nightlife – that is not this region's strength.
