Lake Maggiore Markets: All Weekly Markets, Insider Tips & Arriving by Water

At a glance

Lake Maggiore markets at a glance

There are many traditional weekly markets around Lake Maggiore – and on almost every day of the week there's a market somewhere on the lake. Here's a quick, practical overview of all the main towns, weekdays and times so you can plan your market visit in a relaxed way.

The most important markets on Lake Maggiore at a glance:

  • ◆
Luino – Wednesday (approx. 8:30–17:00, east shore)
  • ◆
Cannobio – Sunday (approx. 8:00–13:00, west shore)
  • ◆
    Verbania-Intra – Saturday (approx. 8:00–17:00, west shore)
  • ◆
Stresa – Friday (approx. 8:00–13:00, west shore)
  • ◆
Locarno – Thursday (approx. 9:00–17:00, Swiss side)
  • ◆
Ascona – Tuesday (approx. 10:00–17:00, Swiss side, May–October)
  • ◆
Arona – Tuesday (approx. 8:00–14:30, south shore)
  • ◆
Baveno – Monday (approx. 8:00–13:00, west shore)
  • ◆
    Laveno-Mombello – Tuesday (approx. 8:00–12:00, east shore)

Most markets run from about 8:00 to 13:00; some of the large markets continue into the afternoon. Note that times and the number of stalls can change slightly with the seasons – in winter many markets are smaller, in summer they're in full swing.

A special tip: market visits combine perfectly with a private boat tour on the Striga Constanze. Instead of hunting for parking on the crowded lakeside road, you glide calmly across the water and moor close to the market stalls.

Finally stroll the Lake Maggiore markets in peace – without parking stress

Finally stroll the Lake Maggiore markets in peace – without parking stress

Packed lanes, overflowing car parks, heat on the lakeside road: market days are especially crowded, and anyone arriving by car often spends more time looking for a space than at the market itself. Parking is scarce on market days – especially in Luino on Wednesdays and in Cannobio on Sundays.

But there's another way. Public transport is recommended, and travelling over the water is even more relaxed. Boats offer a relaxed way to reach the big markets on Lake Maggiore – whether by public scheduled boats or private charter. Arriving early in the morning or around midday avoids the biggest crowds.

With the Striga Constanze you start your market day right on the lake: a calm crossing on a traditional gaff cutter, mooring near the promenade – in Cannobio, Intra or Stresa, for example – and then strolling on without a car, without traffic jams, without stress. Your skipper knows the best moorings and adapts the route flexibly to the market of your choice.

Southern charm

Why the markets on Lake Maggiore are so special

The markets are a popular attraction in the region and radiate southern charm. Strolling through one of the street markets on the lake, you dive into a bustle of colours, scents and voices – a mix of tourists and locals haggling, tasting and marvelling side by side between the stalls.

The markets offer regional food and handcrafted products. Specifically, you'll find:

  • Regional specialities: Cheeses like Toma and Bettelmatt, salami and cured meats, olive oil from Piedmont, honey from the Valle Vigezzo, dried herbs and pickled antipasti. Cheese and salami are popular products at the markets.
  • Fresh food: The markets have fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables – peaches and grapes in summer, chestnuts in autumn. Plus fresh fish from the lake and meat from regional producers.
  • Clothing and leather goods: Italian fashion, shoes, belts, bags and clothing – from simple textiles from €10–20 to quality leather goods from €40–100. It's worth checking quality differences carefully.
  • Household goods and more: Ceramics, woodwork, flowers, accessories and typical souvenirs round off the selection.

Particularly appealing: many markets take place on historic squares right by the water – along the lake promenade in Cannobio, on the Piazza Grande in Locarno or on the Piazza Mercato in the Italian towns. The view over the lake is part of the shopping experience.

The main weekly markets on Lake Maggiore in detail

In this section we present the most important weekly markets individually: atmosphere, offer, typical times, how to get there and how each market can be combined with a boat tour. The times refer to the main season from spring to autumn – in winter individual markets may be smaller or have shorter opening hours.

Luino – the Wednesday classic

Luino hosts the largest and most famous weekly market on Lake Maggiore. The town on the Italian east shore turns into a huge open-air bazaar every Wednesday. The market in Luino takes place every Wednesday from 8:30 to 17:00, and the weekly market in Luino has over 400 stalls.

Its historical background makes this market unique: Luino has held market rights since 1541, granted by Emperor Charles V – a tradition going back almost 500 years. The stalls spread through numerous lanes of the old town, along the lakeside promenade and from Viale Dante to Viale Beltrami. Luino's market was also immortalised in literature by the writer Piero Chiara, who lived in Luino and captured the atmosphere of the market bustle in his works.

The offer is enormous: a huge selection of clothing, leather goods, shoes, household items, fruit and vegetables, plus speciality stalls with cheese, cured meats and regional delicacies. Traders come from the whole region and beyond.

Good to know: traffic is heavy on Wednesdays and parking is scarce and expensive. Arriving by boat is much more relaxed – public ferries run from Cannero, Cannobio or Laveno, among others. For guests of the Striga Constanze, a private market tour on the gaff cutter is ideal: cross to Luino in the morning, stroll the market at leisure, stop for a swim in the afternoon and sail back across the lake.

Cannobio – Sunday market right on the lake promenade

The market in Cannobio takes place every Sunday from 8:00 to 13:00 – along the lakeside promenade and on Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III. Cannobio has around 300 stalls lined up picturesquely along the water.

The atmosphere is special: colourful bustle right by the lake, cafés overlooking the water, lots of visitors and day-trippers from Switzerland and Germany. The Sunday market has something festive about it – an outing that combines shopping with a holiday feeling.

The range includes regional cheeses, salami, pickled antipasti, seasonal fruit and vegetables, leather goods, fashion and typical souvenirs. Within walking distance is the Santuario della Pietà pilgrimage church – a worthwhile detour before or after the market.

If you come by car, arrive early – the car parks fill up quickly. Alternatively, you can moor right at the lake promenade by boat. On request, the Striga Constanze also departs from or calls at Cannobio – perfect for a relaxed Sunday outing.

Verbania-Intra – Saturday market with a large selection

The market in Verbania-Intra takes place on Saturdays from 8:00 to 17:00 and spreads across several squares in the historic centre near the lakeshore. The market in Verbania-Intra has about 240 stalls – making it one of the largest weekly markets in the region.

Its speciality: a large selection of fresh fish – both lake and sea fish – plus cheese, cured meats, vegetables and fruit. There are also stalls with clothing, shoes and household goods. The Intra market has a rather "local" character: many Italians from the hinterland, a more relaxed atmosphere than in Luino, less crowding especially in the afternoon.

It's easy to reach via the Intra–Laveno ferry. Parking is a bit easier to find than in Luino, but in summer you should still arrive early. A lovely combination: cross from Laveno to Intra on the Striga Constanze in the morning, visit the market and stroll through town, then sail back in the afternoon with a swim stop off Verbania-Pallanza or in a quiet bay.

Stresa, Baveno & Pallanza – smaller markets as part of a day out

Building blocks

Stresa, Baveno & Pallanza – smaller markets as part of a day out

These markets are smaller but combine perfectly with other highlights – such as the Borromean Islands or Santa Caterina del Sasso.

Stresa: Market on Fridays from approx. 8:00 to 13:00 on Piazza Capucci, with around 50–60 stalls. A mix of food, clothing, accessories and household goods. The proximity to the piers for Isola Bella and Isola dei Pescatori makes Stresa the ideal starting point: market first, then islands.

Baveno: Market on Mondays from approx. 8:00 to 13:00. A relaxed, almost village-like atmosphere, followed by a lovely walk along the promenade. In high summer the district of Feriolo offers additional market events on Thursdays.

Verbania-Pallanza: Market on Friday mornings, focusing on textiles, fabrics, clothing and food. The historic lakeside promenade makes a visit worthwhile even without much shopping.

All three places are easy to reach by scheduled boat and can be ideally built into private boat tours – with flexible stops, shore visits and individual timings.

Ticino

Locarno & Ascona – markets on the Swiss side

There are also worthwhile weekly markets on the Swiss side of Lake Maggiore – especially for guests planning to cross the border.

Locarno: The Thursday market on the Piazza Grande is especially lively from spring to autumn, open from approx. 9:00 to 17:00. The market in Locarno offers regional Ticino products – food, flowers, local produce and some crafts. In season (April to October) there's also a market on Wednesdays.

Ascona: Tuesday market along the lakeside promenade (Piazza G. Motta), approx. 10:00 to 17:00, typically between May and October. The setting is particularly atmospheric – with views of the mountains and the lake. Besides crafts and clothing there are regional specialities.

Important notes for the Swiss side: the currency is CHF (Swiss francs), and card payment is more common than at Italian street markets. For larger purchases, observe customs regulations when returning to Italy. Tours on the Striga Constanze normally start on the Italian side, but the Swiss markets are easy to reach by scheduled boat and car – for example via Ponte Tresa or the lakeside road.

Vintage & art

Art, flea and antiques markets around Lake Maggiore

Besides the regular weekly markets, there are also atmospheric special markets around the lake – crafts, antiques, vintage and curiosities. Art and antiques markets take place irregularly on Lake Maggiore but are always worth a visit.

Well-known dates and places:

  • Arona: Arona has an antiques market every 3rd Sunday of the month – with old toys, paintings, collectibles and ceramics from the region.
  • Varese: Varese has an art market every 1st Sunday of the month, where local artists show their work.
  • Sesto Calende: Sesto Calende has an antiques market every 3rd Saturday of the month with woodwork, vintage furniture and curiosities.
  • Como: The market in Como takes place every Saturday from 8:30 to 18:00 – a mix of weekly market and antiques, ideal for a day trip to the city.

Typical goods at the antiques markets: ceramics, old books, paintings, woodwork, jewellery and collectibles. As dates are irregular, it's worth checking with the local tourist offices or municipal websites in advance.

Suggested day plan: explore the antiques market in the morning, then a walk along the shore or a lake cruise on a traditional boat like the Striga Constanze in the afternoon – turning the market visit into a well-rounded experience.

Practical tips for your market visit on Lake Maggiore

To make sure your trip to the Lake Maggiore markets goes smoothly, here are the most important tips from experience:

Best times

Between 8 and 10 in the morning crowds are still manageable and the choice of fresh produce is best. Late morning offers full stalls but more bustle. In high summer it gets very hot at midday – shade is rare on many squares.

What to bring

Comfortable shoes, sun hat, water bottle, cloth bags or a backpack for purchases. In hot weather bring a small cool bag for cheese and cured meats.

Paying

Cash (euros) is standard at Italian markets – card payment is only available at some stalls. For markets in Switzerland, have CHF ready or rely on card payment.

Safety

Keep valuables close to your body and watch out for pickpockets, especially on market days like Wednesday in Luino or Sunday in Cannobio, when particularly large crowds are about.

Carrying your purchases

Make heavy or delicate purchases at the end of your market visit – especially if a walk or boat trip follows.

Parking and traffic

Arrive early, look for signposted car parks, use the alternative arrival over the water. On big market days, travelling by boat or scheduled ferry is particularly worthwhile.

Sustainability

Prefer regional products, avoid single-use plastic, use reusable bags – that way you support the local traders and the region.

Striga Constanze

Combine markets & lake: by gaff cutter to your favourite market

Imagine: instead of sitting in a traffic jam outside Luino, you glide across the lake early in the morning, coffee in hand, the mountains reflected in the water – and half an hour later you're standing among the market stalls. That's how an ordinary market day becomes an experience you won't forget.

A typical 4-hour tour might look like this: departure from Laveno, a relaxed crossing to Intra or Stresa, two to three hours of free time at the weekly market, then the trip back with a swim stop in a quiet bay – all at your own pace.

All tours on the Striga Constanze are private tours: only your group on board, up to 8 guests at a fixed price, up to 12 on request. Departure times, length of stay and route are flexibly tailored to the market of your choice.

Concrete ideas for your market day on the lake:

  • ◆
Wednesdays: Luino market as the main destination. A morning tour with a view of the market bustle from the water, then a shore visit and shopping, a swim stop on the way back in the afternoon.
  • ◆
Sundays: Cannobio market, then anchoring off the lake promenade and swimming in the lake – the perfect Sunday outing.
  • ◆
Saturdays: Intra market plus an aperitivo break on the boat with regional products you bought at the market.

Your skipper knows the best moorings near the markets and acts as a local guide. Individual wishes – a particular market, a special place, a restaurant visit on land – can be discussed in advance.
