Vegetarian Food on Lake Maggiore – Meat-Free Enjoyment Aboard the Striga Constanze

Vegetarian enjoyment

Vegetarian enjoyment – without giving up romance or the holiday experience

More and more people want to eat more consciously – especially on holiday. Couples and small groups are looking for experiences that combine pleasure with values: fresh ingredients, light dishes, no meat on the plate, but all the more flavour and atmosphere. Eating vegetarian is far from sacrifice – on the contrary, it opens up a world full of variety and inspiration.

On the Striga Constanze we offer vegetarian and vegan menus for special occasions on request – as a romantic date for two, as a candlelight dinner at sunset or as a relaxed meal on the lake. The season starts on 1 March 2027, individual enquiries are possible now. Our exclusive private tours start from €490 for the whole group.

What awaits you: a romantic dinner on a traditional gaff cutter with red gaff sails, combined with plant-based cuisine from regional ingredients – an authentic, unforgettable experience without meat and without compromise.

Finally eat vegetarian without compromising on ambience

Finally eat vegetarian without compromising on ambience

Anyone who lives vegetarian or vegan knows the situation: on holiday on Lake Maggiore dozens of restaurants on the lakeside promenade beckon, but the menu often offers just one or two meat-free dishes – often no more than a side with a few vegetables. At a romantic dinner the choice remains sobering, while meat lovers can pick from everything.

On the Striga Constanze, enjoyment, atmosphere and personal wishes take centre stage – not the meat on the plate. Imagine: the sunset bathes the rock faces of Santa Caterina del Sasso in warm light, the Borromean Islands drift by on the horizon, wine-red sails billow in the evening breeze – and in front of you is a vegetarian 3-course menu with fresh pasta, grilled vegetables and a dessert of seasonal fruit.

Whether vegetarian, vegan, low-gluten or with other dietary needs: couples can clarify their individual preferences in advance via the contact form or WhatsApp. That's how a boat tour becomes a tailor-made culinary experience.

Why vegetarian dining on the Striga Constanze works so well

Why is a vegetarian menu worth it on a sailing boat of all places, rather than in a classic restaurant or on a mass-tourism boat? The answer lies in a combination of freshness, intimacy and flexibility that is hardly possible on land.

Fresh, regional ingredients from Lake Maggiore

The region around the lake is shaped by Mediterranean cuisine with vegetables, olive oil, herbs and Italian cheese. Vegetarian recipes often use fresh, seasonal vegetables – for example a caprese with buffalo mozzarella, roast vegetables from Piedmontese varieties or pasta with tomatoes and basil. Seasonal ingredients are important for vegetarian cooking, and on Lake Maggiore the choice is especially abundant in summer.

Individually planned vegetarian or vegan menus

You discuss your wishes in advance by email or WhatsApp. Allergies, intolerances (nuts, gluten, lactose) and special diets are taken into account. Vegetarians don't eat meat products, but dairy and eggs are allowed. Vegans avoid all animal products, including milk and eggs. Lacto-ovo vegetarians eat both dairy products and eggs, while lacto vegetarians consume dairy but no eggs. Ovo vegetarians, in turn, eat eggs but no dairy. Whatever the category – we adapt the menu.

A private boat instead of a crowded promenade

No crowds, no buffet stress, no strangers. Whether a candlelight dinner, a marriage proposal or a wedding anniversary: the calm setting on the Striga Constanze gives your evening the space it deserves.

Combining cuisine and sightseeing

Your vegetarian menu is combined with a stop in a sheltered bay for swimming, with views of Isola Bella and Isola Madre or with the magical light off Stresa and Pallanza. Sights and food merge into one experience.

Light, easily digestible food for relaxed boat tours

Vegetarian dishes are ideal on the water: not too heavy, perfect in warm weather, yet filling thanks to pulses, rice, pasta and vegetables. Plant foods often have a lower energy density and keep you full for a long time – just right for enjoying the lake to the full without boredom or sluggishness setting in.

In 3 steps

How your vegetarian dinner on Lake Maggiore works

From the first idea to the last course: the process is straightforward, personal and tailored to your wishes.

Step 1: Enquire without obligation and share your food wishes

Contact us via the contact form, WhatsApp (+39 333 3802 383) or email (info@striga-constanze.com). We usually reply within 24 hours. The 2027 season starts on 1 March – in bad weather, free rebooking is a matter of course.

What you should tell us:

  • ◆
Preferred date and time (e.g. a sunset tour in the evening)
  • ◆
    Tour length: 3, 4 or 7 hours
  • ◆
    Diet: vegetarian, vegan or mixed
  • ◆
    Allergies and intolerances
  • ◆
Occasion: date, birthday, proposal, wedding celebration

Step 2: Receive a menu proposal & tour plan

Based on your wishes, we create a menu proposal – for example Mediterranean vegetable antipasti, a vegetarian pasta as the main course and a dessert with seasonal fruit. Vegetarian dishes are often quick and easy to prepare, which is crucial on board: the preparation has to fit the rhythm of the tour.

Route and theme are agreed: a romance tour for a proposal with a sea of lights, a quiet bay for swimming with a light lunch, or a dinner with a view of the Castelli di Cannero. Everything comes from a single source – your skipper is also your guide. The boat is available exclusively for up to 8 guests at a fixed price, up to 12 guests are possible on request.

Step 3: Come aboard and simply enjoy

In the home port of Laveno-Mombello you board the Striga Constanze – 9.20 m hull length plus 3 m bowsprit, red gaff sails, a set table. On sunset tours candles flicker while the gaff cutter glides quietly across the lake.

The courses are integrated into the tour: aperitivo on the way out, main course in a sheltered bay, dessert with the sea of lights of Stresa or Pallanza. If you like, you can also combine vegetarian catering with one of our meditation tours or the exit game "The Treasure of the Mazzarditi" – light, plant-based food perfectly supports the feeling of slowing down.

What sets our vegetarian offer apart

What sets our vegetarian offer apart

According to Tripadvisor there are over 100 restaurants with vegetarian options around Lake Maggiore – from Cannobio to Locarno, from Stresa to Laveno. But between a standard side dish in a crowded eatery and a thoughtfully planned vegetarian menu on a private sailing boat lie worlds.

  • ◆
Traditional gaff cutter instead of a motorboat – No loud engine noise, but the sound of wind and water. The Striga Constanze, a faithful 1979 replica of a Northern European working boat, offers plenty of space for a relaxed dinner on its 9.20 m hull. 55.7 m² of red sail above your plate – you won't find that in any restaurant in the region. More about the boat.
  • ◆
Small group instead of a mass boat – A maximum of 8 guests at a fixed price, up to 12 on request, no anonymous busloads. Personal service and individual menu wishes are a matter of course. Vegetarian options are not an afterthought here but part of the whole experience.
  • ◆
Vegetarian and vegan menus for special occasions – Candlelight dinners, dates, proposals or a small wedding dinner with plant-based cuisine are explicitly possible and carefully planned. Vegetarian dishes are not treated as a "stopgap" but as a full, opulent main course.
  • ◆
Flexible schedule instead of a rigid ferry line – Route and stops are adapted to the position of the sun, the weather and your preferred backdrops. Whether Isola Bella, Santa Caterina del Sasso or the botanical gardens of Isola Madre – you set the pace and choose what you want to see.

Examples of vegetarian menus on board

The following recipe ideas are inspiration, not a fixed menu. Vegetarian cooking offers endless variations – and vegetables, pulses, rice and pasta are core ingredients that work wonderfully on board. Feel free to bring your own ideas or let us surprise you. Popular ingredients in vegetarian recipes are rice, potatoes and pasta – all things that combine superbly with Mediterranean flair.

Light summer dinner for two

  • ◆
Starter: Antipasti platter with grilled courgette, peppers, olives, creamy burrata and sun-dried tomatoes – with fresh bread and olive oil from the region.
  • ◆
Main course: Fresh pasta with basil and walnut pesto, roasted cherry tomatoes and grated parmesan. Vegetarian cooking includes dishes like this that can be prepared in under 30 minutes – perfect for cooking on board.
  • ◆
Dessert: Citrus sorbet with prosecco and fresh berries – perfect on warm evenings in July or August, when the lake shimmers in golden light.

Vegetarian lunch with a swim stop

  • ◆
Snack/aperitivo: Focaccia with rosemary, tomatoes and olive oil, plus light vegetable crostini with aubergine and onions.
  • ◆
Main course: A colourful rice pan is a popular simple dish – here as a rice bowl with grilled vegetables (aubergine, courgette, peppers, broccoli), Italian cheese or marinated tofu. Combine vegetables with a protein source and a whole-grain side for balanced vegetarian meals.
  • ◆
To finish: A fruit platter with regional stone fruit – peaches, grapes, cherries. Uncomplicated and ideal with children on board too.

Vegan candlelight dinner

  • ◆
Starter: Bruschetta trio with tomato-basil, mushroom cream and roasted peppers – all purely plant-based, no dairy, no eggs, no honey. A vegan diet is based exclusively on plant foods, and you can taste it here in every bite.
  • ◆
Main course: Creamy vegetable curry with coconut milk, chickpeas and seasonal vegetables – cauliflower, peas, asparagus – served with fragrant rice. Replace meat with lentils, beans, chickpeas, tofu and tempeh for good protein sources. Pulses are an important protein source in vegetarian dishes and also provide fibre. The Italian twist comes from fresh herbs from the garden.
  • ◆
Dessert: Vegan chocolate mousse made with aquafaba, with orange segments. Vegan desserts are planned on request – nothing is impossible.

Who is vegetarian dining on the Striga Constanze ideal for?

Eating vegetarian on Lake Maggiore isn't just for committed vegetarians. According to the BMEL Nutrition Report 2024, 69% of respondents in Germany have bought vegetarian or vegan alternatives at least once. In Germany about 10% are considered vegetarian or vegan, plus 30–40% of the population who live flexitarian. Switching to a vegetarian diet can happen gradually – and a special evening on the lake is the perfect start. Meat-free Mondays are a good way to get into vegetarian eating, but a vegetarian candlelight dinner on Lake Maggiore is an even better one.

Couples planning a romantic vegetarian date

Proposal "Sunset & Sea of Lights", honeymoon highlight, anniversary in June or September. The atmosphere on the water, the view of the Borromean Islands, plus light food instead of heavy meat dishes – that's how an evening becomes unforgettable.

Vegetarian or vegan wedding parties

An intimate wedding celebration on board (3–4 hours, from €690) with plant-based finger food or a full menu. For everyone who values conscious consumption.

Groups of friends with mixed eating habits

The menu is designed so that vegetarians and meat lovers alike leave full and happy. The focus is on meat-free dishes that convince others too – and show that greens are anything but boring.

Families who want to show their children sustainable enjoyment

Family tour with a vegetarian picnic, child-friendly food like vegetable skewers, pasta with tomato sauce, potatoes and fruit. That's how children learn that eating vegetarian is fun.

People focused on mindfulness and meditation

Combined with our meditation tours: light, plant-based food with lots of vegetables supports the feeling of slowing down. A varied selection of vegetables, fruit, nuts and whole grains provides vitamins and minerals – and the clear head that meditation needs.

Tour length & prices – how much time to plan for a vegetarian menu

The length of the tour determines how extensive your vegetarian menu can be: from an aperitivo with salads and nibbles to a full dinner with several courses, everything is possible. All prices are fixed prices for the private group including skipper.

3-hour tour – compact enjoyment

€490 for the private group of up to 8 people (up to 12 on request). Vegetarian food on request, details discussed in advance.

Typical schedule: sunset tour with an aperitivo platter, a light main course or substantial vegetarian nibbles. A glass of prosecco, grilled vegetables, fresh bruschetta – and the lake does the rest.

Recommended for: proposals, a first date, a compact vegetarian dinner without a long swim.

4-hour tour – our popular standard

€690 for the private group of up to 8 people (up to 12 on request).

Typical schedule: swim stop in a sheltered bay, time for 2–3 vegetarian courses (starter, main, dessert) at leisure. For example a lunch with salads, pasta and a fruit platter – or an upscale candlelight dinner with candles and lake views.

Recommended for: a holiday candlelight dinner, birthdays, a romantic afternoon or evening in late summer.

7-hour tour – a whole day with a culinary focus

€990 for the private group of up to 8 people (up to 12 on request).

Typical schedule: a combination of brunch, afternoon snacks and an early dinner. Time for several stops, swimming, possibly a restaurant visit ashore plus vegetarian snacks on board. Avoiding red meat lowers the intake of saturated fat – a whole day of light food leaves you feeling energised and relaxed at the same time.

Recommended for: special anniversaries, small weddings, retreat days with digital detox and vegetarian cuisine.
